Fashion Week Update#1: Alexander Wang and Rag and Bone

Jason Wu Fall 2013

Sexy, steely cosmopolitan style even found its way into the collection of the reliantly sweet-chic Jason Wu this season. So far at New York Fashion Week, it seems like every girl on the runway has a touch of street-cool.

Alexander Wang definitely showed us that he is ready for Balenciaga. A certain richness has been added to Wang's collections since being named creative director of Balenciaga just before the début of his nominal pre-fall 2013 collection. The Wang woman has ascended to a new level, making street wear ultra Chic. For Alexander Wang pre-fall, Wang showed a sleekly draped loose fitting sweatshirt-gray top with just below-the-knee leather skirt.

For fall 2013, Wang's haute street-chic yielded some wonderful separates including ash gray mohair knits with fur running down the middle. The 29-year-old designer also showed fur boxing gloves in both mitten size and arm-length, the latter giving a displeasing gorilla arm effect as if the model is going to climb the Empire State Building or throw some barrels Donkey Kong style.

Altuzarra showed a much more wearable version of the primate arm.

Rag and Bone sent models down the runway in gray houndstooth sweaters. There was a heightened sense of sophistication added to the label this season.

Tweed jackets were also shown at Rag and Bone AW13. Marcus Wainwright, the label's designer, resisted the refined polish of such classics by enlivening them with radioactive Warholian colors and youthful short hemlines that were high enough to reveal biker shorts underneath.

Wainwright also injected oranges and reds inspired by 1950s and 60s flight attendant uniforms.

Though Wainwright is designing for the near future, AW13, these girls felt as if they could be from the future. I imagine some ultra-hip woman living in some futuristic metropolis heading to work at her graphic design or architecture firm. Maybe she designs hologram houses.
