Smarty Pants

Fashion Show: A scene  from 1960s art house film, Qui Ete Vous Polly Magoo? The film satirizes the fashion industry.

Faithful fashion followers have descended on Lincoln Center for the semi-annual pilgrimage that follows the sacred sequined trail from New York to Paris, with stops in London and Milan in between.

According to a recent article in the New York Times, we can expect the pendulum to swing in the opposite direction this season. The bells and whistles that came in the form of attention demanding prints, power clashing, and fancy trims will be traded for a more stripped-down, sumptuous anonymity rendered with "well considered details" and "heightened attention to overlooked features like shape, proportion, and fit."

The change is in response to the increase in consumer fashion IQ. Customers increasing knowledge about clothes and their construction has led to a demand for "smart" clothes.

A return to simplicity falls in line with the current 90s trend. The decade was sartorially marked by minimalism and grunge.

During the spring 2013 shows, Dries Van Noten showed grungy plaids  skilfully mixed with florals.
